Evolutionary Anatomy of Lungless Salamanders

At the KLI, I intend to pursue the KLI Writing-Up Resident Fellowship in morphometrics as part of the Fall 2025 cohort. However, I would be available to begin as early as July 2025. If awarded this fellowship, I would use it to write up my dissertation research, which focuses on discovering how shifts in life cycle strategy and feeding mode shape the tempo and mode of morphological evolution in the feeding apparatus of lungless salamanders. I use CT scans to compare differences in cranial and jaw anatomy between salamander lineages that display different life cycle strategies and feeding modes. I use diceCT to investigate the soft- tissue anatomy in a clade of paedomorphic salamanders to see if repeated shifts to subterranean environments influenced the timing of development and changes to the shape of morphological structures. These data and the results from these studies will contribute to the theoretical understanding of how 3D geometric morphometrics and the analysis of soft-tissue anatomy through diceCT can increase our understanding of evolution and development.
