Rebecca R. Cuciniello

Rebecca R. Cuciniello (they/them) is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the University of Genova (FINO), working under the supervision of Maria Cristina Amoretti (University of Genova) and Elena Casetta (University of Turin). Their PhD project is a philosophical investigation on the notion of teleology in biology vis-à-vis that of plasticity. According to them, in the current “convergence” between philosophical theories of biological agency and autonomy, and biological theories on the role of organisms in evolution (e.g. sensu Extended Evolutionary Synthesis), philosophers and biologists have been talking past each other. Biologists have appealed to organismal agency for their claims, understanding it as an essentially creative and transformative principle; philosophers need to interpret it instead as conservative in order to naturalise it on causal bases. In turn, philosophers struggle to explain how organisms could transform the very goals that are supposed to make them intelligible as agents in the first place, without relying on previous adaptation by natural selection, thus contradicting the biologists’ claims about evolutionary causation. Rebecca’s PhD project proposes that the only way forward is a thorough reconsideration of teleology, and that a philosophical notion of plasticity can act as its critical mirror.
